The F-22 Raptor exemplifies the very pinnacle of air superiority. Decades of research have contributed to the ground-up design of this plan that was forged from the outer limits of chemistry, aerodynamics, materials science, and engineering. The F-22 Raptor was the first jet designed completely by computer before a model was fabricated. The design incorporated a concept known as continuous curvatures, and when combined with the RAM radar absorbent skin of the aircraft; enemy radar waves simply flow past like water. The continuous curvature is clearly visible in the F-22 when compared with the accompanying F-15 Eagle. The F-22 has been slated to replace the F-15 in the air dominance role. Another stealth feature is the internalization of the weapons system, which also helps to preserve the continuous curvature.

Imagine this scenario, a squadron of 5 F-15 Eagles is heading straight into enemy territory for a strike. The enemy scrambles fighters to intercept them. A pair of stealth F-22 fighters fly ahead of the F-15s, and the enemy only sees the F-15s on their radars. The F-22s lock onto each incoming interceptor, and can fire missiles before the enemy ever knew what hit them. That is air superiority.

FA22 Raptors Oct2005

Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT]

The FA-22 Raptor is a symbol of Future Firepower. The Raptor encompasses advanced avionics, a very maneuverable airframe, and the ability to cruise at supersonic speeds without the use of an afterburner which increases it’s effective range. The F-22 can internally carry two 1,000 pound-class Joint Direct Attack Munitions or JDAM’s, along with a variety of air-to-air missiles. By carrying all of it’s munitions internally, the F-22 reduces it’s drag and adds to its stealth capabilities. The raptor can acquire targets and engage multiple targets simultaneously before the enemy aircraft even know what hit them. The f-22 raptor is the future of air superiority. I have included a testing video below so you can see the incredible capabilities of the f22 with your own eyes.

“The Lockheed Martin F-22a Raptor is fast, has a long range, and is more maneuverable than any other jet in the sky, but it’s crazy dumb when it comes to sending out its data to other jets and ground control. Pilots of the speedy aircraft are required to talk fast, telling other pilots in the area what targets they’ve seen and relaying other information.”

Small Diameter Bomb – GBU-39

The GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb – the future of ultra-surgical air strikes.

Since the days of the first Gulf War, when it became clear to the world that precision air strikes would be the “go to” option for the opening rounds of nearly any theater scale military operations, the technology of precision guided munitions has increased rapidly.  We have witnessed bombs being guided into their targets by lasers, GPS, and even a human watching through a camera on the nose of the weapon.  Once the concept of precision guidance was no longer a novelty, the virtuous auspices of limiting collateral damage and economic efficiency have led military planners and weapons designers to push the envelope of precision weapon technology even further.

During the Desert Storm era, the smallest precision bombs available packed 500 lb high-explosive warheads, and the 500 pounder was typically used on only the smallest of targets.  They certainly were precise enough on surgical targeting, but the massive explosion and pressure wave still causes widespread devastation to buildings and well, people, that are in the vicinity of the blast.  Now I’m not saying that it’s ever goign to be possible to truly eliminate collateral damage, but I believe technology has reached a stopping point concerning precision-guided air-launched munitions.  It’s not as if limiting collateral damage is such a bad thing after all; so I guess we can go ahead and bestow the honorable hallmark characteristic of the next wave of precision munitions:  Efficiency…because accuracy is a given.

Fresh on the block is the new GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb.  The GBU-39 is the first 250 lb class precision guided munition, and is not only intended to allow the pilot to strike more targets per sortie, but also to -you guessed it- limit collateral damage.  A full rack of GBU-39s, 4 bombs total, can easily take the place of one 2000 lb GBU 109 “bunker buster” guided bomb on typical strike platforms such as the F-15C or F-22 Raptor aircraft.  While the 2000 lb GBU-109 penetrator definitely retains its place as a select weapon of choice for large and hardended targets, the GBU-39 SDB surpasses the GBU-109 in many different realms of performance.  For starters, the GBU-39 also has significant stand-off capabilities.  With it’s guidance wings, the bomb can coast into targets from far greater ranges than the GBU-109, from more than 40 nautical miles out.  Likewise, the design of the warhead also allows the Small Diameter Bomb to achieve the same penetration capabilities of it’s much larger 2000 lb counterpart.  All in all, the SMB GBU-39 allows for a great amount of flexibility for whomever is designing strike missions for an urban environment.

Not only does the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb limit it’s size to only 250 lbs, it also can be fitted with different types of warheads, one of which is specially designed to limit the blast radius and shockwave of the explosion.  This new explosive is called D.I.M.E., short for Dense Inert Metal Explosive.  DIME explosives basically combine a powder of inert metals–inert means that the metal is resistant to chemical reactions–into the explosive, which essentially weighs down the blast.  The explosive ignites, but the metal powder will only fly so far before air resistance and gravity will slow it down.  DIME explosives are proven to limit the blast radius of explosions, but they are also notorious for the effects that they can have on personnel.  Decapitations, dismemberments, and even cancer later down the line caused by the imbedded metal powder are all facts of life when DIME is deployed.  i guess the counter-point is that those folks were at the wrong place at the wrong time, especially under the known threat of air raids.

Fast forward to Israel’s Operation Cast Lead against the Hamas regime in Gaza, and you’ve got the exact scenario where this weapon is intended to be used.  A crowded urban environment, where military targets are amorphous among the civilian landscape, and limiting collateral damage is essential to maintaining some semblance of self-restraint, saw small diameter bombs being deployed in large numbers.  Indeed, reports have come out of Gaza of people suffering the effects of DIME explosives, but the IDF remains deflective about admitting to their use.  The use of the GBU-39 that isn’t debated is the penetrator version being deployed against the smuggling tunnels at the Rafah crossing.  The IDF deployed multiple GBU-39 penetetrators along the lengths of the tunnels, essentially burying them in successive sections.

Transformers Movie Promotes the Military, Propaganda Some Say…

Transformers07So basically the Transformers movie is pretty bad ass, and it also is like a 2.5 hour commercial for the US Military. Not like there’s anything wrong with that, but the media has, since even before the release of the movie, been debating the pros and cons of the heavily laden promotional content paid for by either US defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT], General Dynamics [NYSE: GD], Boeing Co. [NYSE: BA], and Force Protection Inc. [NYSE: FRPT] or even simply the US Armed Forces themselves. I believe that there is one very notable point when considering the costs and benefits of employing such advertising tactics on the general populace. The first perspective can be derived from my own childhood influences. Having grown up with GI Joes being one of my favorite toys, in fact owning hundreds of action figures and vehicles, I naturally took an interest in all things machinery and especially new and complex weapons. These toys were basically plastic hand-held replicas of the modern weapons we have used on our crusade to bring peace to the Middle East. We have all heard that we can be products of our environment, and now here I am blogging about only the most bad ass military technology to hit the battlefield. All politics aside, the Iraq War has provided the world stage a full screen view of exactly what types of offensive capabilities the US wields in its immense arsenal. Not so ironically, the Transformers movie also depicts the incredible possibilities of appropriately applying US force at just the right places. I mean, they actually take out a robot transformer scorpion from outer space! If they can do that, then surely they can do anything else they put their minds to. Respectively, and likewise in turn, this new transformers enterprise will likely influence the young children of today, given that it contains the appropriate levels of special effects and fast-paced action to hold their attention while the weapons are shown doing their thing. A new and improved tool, the new Transformers enterprise has characters composed by the likes of the newest military machines to storm the scene: Starring as actual transformers: the M1 Abrams tank, the F22 Raptor, a Force Protection “Buffalo” mine-protected vehicle, and the MH-53 Pave Low helicopter. These characters are all going to have their own toys to go along with them, but the movie also displays an awesome scene showing an incredible overhead view of an AC-130 gunship firing its weapons (it’s computer-enhanced though).
All that we can hope for is that this movie hasn’t done wrong for the international audience by portraying some of the US military’s hardware as being on the Decepticon’s side (they’re the bad guys). Somehow, though, it still must be beneficial for others to witness examples of the true power that the bad guys are capable of wielding.

F-22 Raptor Maneuvers – Vertical Flight F-22a Raptor

Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT]
The following video of the F-22 shows some of the maneuvers that this Jet is capable of.

The F22 is capable of vertical flight and very high angle of attack maneuvers. Although the F22 boasts some incredible maneuvers:

The F-22 can’t maneuver as well as the Su-37, but it is stealthier, since you can’t have both stealth and maneuverability. Our commanders and generals think that stealth is infinitely more important than maneuverability.
