Well that’s the theory…first look, first shoot, first kill - leveraging the element of surprise.

The truth against big-IRST equipped aircraft might be different. Immense closure rates (of jet combat) almost insure Raptor may get 1-or-2 ‘clean’ aim-120s shots off before it’s on top of the enemy - THEN F-22 has no helmet-sighting for the insuring dogfight (with whatever “remaining” enemy aircraft) - and THAT'S where the trouble will start.

Against (back-flipping & helmet-sighted) Advanced Flanker series; that doesn’t need use its radar (IRST) to use its 30mm gun, IR (Infrared) short or medium range version (R-77) missiles…uh yikes…!!

Remember Flanker IRST sensitivity will be more akin to an airborne (airborne) Infrared astronomical telescope - not a ground based IR telescope - so most all IR wavelengths will reach Flankers IRST…uh…yikes!!
