If you haven’t seen the movie Shooter yet, then you probably aren’t really familiar with the longest range sniper rifle in the world. That’s right, this rifle, the CheyTac M200 Intervention has beaten out the Barrett M107 and Accuracy International AS50 (whose longest ranges were negligably similar at approximately 1 mile) as the longest consitent accuracy rifle to date. Of course it takes more than just the .408 caliber rifle and a trained sniper to achieve hits at its max range, 2500 yards or 1.42 miles. You must also have all the compenents of the so-called CheyTac “Long Range Rifle System”, LRRS. This package includes the CheyTac ballistic computer (a PDA with ballistic software installed on it), a Vector IV laser rangefinder, and a Kestrel 4000 (a device that monitors wind, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure), all linked to the PDA and the OPS Inc muzzle brake and suppressor. 
Quite a mouthful, right? Of course it is, but its all worth it when you can reach out and touch someone at ranges that would impress upon the victim as having just suffered an act of god.
This opening scene of Shooter is way better than the Future Weapons video I was about to post. Ok, in the opening scene of the movie, Marky Mark wipes out a ton of Africans with the .308 M40A3 of the US Marine Corp. He also takes out a Kiowa Warrior helicopter with a Barrett M107, what badass scene! Later in the film, he demonstrates the extreme range capabilities of the M200 Cheytac Intervention, with a direct hit on a tin can from over a mile in distance.
Note, the rifle that he is firing is actually not the CheyTac, but a good scene sniper scene none-the-less.

The rifle he used to kill insurgents in the opening scene was not the Cheytac m200. He was using a Remington 700 either .308 or MLR .338 Lapua Mag. You can see the Remington Markings on the side of the barrel.
The .408 Chey-tac Intervention was from his personal collection which was only fired once during the movie when he fired into a tin on his property.

rifle used in the opening scene was .308 Win M40A3, based on Remington 700 of course (note the picatinny rail on the top of the rifle and new very characteristic for A3 model stock, made by McMillan);
the rifle which was used to take down the heli, was bolt-action .50 M107 Barrett;

the cheytech m200 wasnt the gun in the opening scene, that was a remington .308, the cheytech m200 was shown when he was shooting in the mountains with his dog. and at th end when he was in trial.

i was reseaching it and you can set it to lock back into position so you can fire shots one by one without using a magezine. it alows you to just slide a new one in and advance the slide.

it wasn’t a barrett m107 it was just an m-82. he had to cycle the action because he was shooting blanks that don’t generate enough chamber pressure to cycle the action, its hollywood not south africa!!!

Not exactly. The m200 intervention is merely the rifle. They do offer a ballistic computer setup that actually gives you the windage and elevation adjustment. It also calculates the other trigonometry functions for the rotation of the earth and tells you what the windage/elevation adjustments need to be. You still have to manually dial in the scope.

the scope was a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25x….but in the movie he uses the windage knob to adjust his elevation and that cant happen and 1 more . he was not shooting 1760 yards

Save your money Jake, if you want a precision rifle your better of picking up a Mac Tactical, for a number of reasons. To start withare you a qualified sniper, or have you taken any formal distance/presicion shooting training, secondly unless you have tonnes of cash to piss out the window on ammo, you are far better off wih a rifle in .308 or .338, fack you would still get BMG ammo cheaper, do you have a 2 mile long range to shoot it at? and have you ever shot anything beyond 600yards?
all that aside, if you watch the episode of future weapons he refers to Cpl Rob Furlong PPCLI Sniper who currently holds the longest confirmed kill, he made the kill without the cheytac LRRS, and across an open valley

Ok, first off, the first rifle in the opening scene is a M40A3 in .308 with a Unertal scope mounted on top.
The second rifle that was used was the M82A1A in .50 BMG, also with a Unertal scope.
The Scope that comes with the CheyTac package is made by Nightforce. The ballistic program and PDA that is also included with the package does not/not make the scope adjustments for you. It calculates all of the information and tells you the adjustments and/or hold for that particular shot that the data has been entered for.

it was just flare nothing more. the closest thing to reality that i can think of is he does not want to jerk the trigger. but thats all. the barret argument is pointless. the people who said that the barret is a m-82 and those who think that its the m-107 are arguing the same point. the 82 and the 107 are the same thing. the m-107 is the US Armys designation for the m-82.
AFD Rob Furlong did not use a Cheytac. there are only two major countries who use that round Poland and Turkey. Furlong was on operation anaconda with American forces and he still had to take three shots to hit his target. they did in-fact us the Mcmillan Tac 50 with American Ammo. they producers of shooter probebly picked the cheytac 408 because it was originally a “wildcat” round, meaning it was an original custom made round that just happen to end up in a small size production line. its fairly unique and has never been used in a movie. when it first came out it was supposed to be the middle ground between the 338 lapua and the .50bmg but it never really made it into the US Military. now that is not to say that a US Soldier has never used one in combat because lord knows thats a bold statement but it is in my social circle of the US Army sniper community, unheard of

Specops operators are currently using this weapons platform and the military is still evaluating the need for it in general usage. The Barrett performs well in anti-IED roles and the production capabilities far exceed CheyTac at the current time. I believe the Cheytac is the premier long range rifle for extreme range targets, even better than the 416 Barrett. I have seen an image of a group shot with the M-200 at 1500M + with a sub 3″ group, and the current grouping at distance record of 16″ @ 2600M+ speaks volumes. I have personally handled the rifle used in the movie and it is an all aluminum mockup than weighs 7 or 8 lbs. The actual rifle is like 27lbs and could not be wielded in the hearing scene like it was.

for most precision marksmen, the cheytac is like a lamborgini to a go-cart driver in the respect that you can spend much less and get a very effective “sniper rifle”. i, for example, use my kimber lpt at the range AND during deer season ( which is one of the reasons i opted for the .308). AFD was right on when he brought up the range situation. not many people have a place to go shoot 2000m. i still get a buzz out of hitting my mark from a grand. none if this means that it’s not a pretty sick piece of gear, of course, but for most of us, not practical

one more thing i noticed today about the cover of ’shooter’ is that the one on this site is different than on my copy. mine has marky mark holding what ATB a rem 700. i would guess they put the cheytac on the newer copies, which means they put it in the pic with a computer, which somewhat explains the knob issue

107 has claw bi-pob 82 doesn’t only diff, the m200 is a waste, a good rem 700 only 500-600. and his m40a3 in movie likely could have been in 300 win mag or 300 hmr. they are more common for snipers in us military. many bolt action snipers can be set not so cycle as the movement of the action decreases accuracy. less movement better shot. and the post about the scope not seeing that well is correct. that can wouldn’t be visible with any scope even close to that size. And every jack ass on here that askes where to get the gun obviously doesn’t know s**t about guns or they would know how to get one, therefore they shouldn’t even be talking about it. if you cant hit a tin can at 200 yard with iron sites and no scope you don’t need this gun. and yes that includes myself.

In the opening scene The shooter fires a semi-auto Barrett by loading by hand. So no bullet. Shots hitted the targets in head. Sniper aims head only when it’s only visible part. Otherwise the targeting point is in the middle of torso. This gives tolerace in distance approximation.
And .50cal doesn’t hit a head from above neither blow a brain to 100yds from a mile.

im no expert by any means, with that said, in the scene with the dinty moore and the chey tac, if you go frame by frame during the shot you can see the trace of the bullet. that means they did acctully shoot the can but im sure it wasnt the mile like they said. and im just taking a guess that the can of soup was really a can of tannerite or simmilar product for the dramatic effect. and like a few people said on here there is no way you would see a can that good at 1760. many good points made on here…….good work boys

ye nice paragraph about the cheytac and “marky mark(its not the 80’s)” but the weapon used to take down the chopper was not a barrett m107, the barrett m107 is a semi-auto, so he wouldnt have to reload after every shot and none of the barretts actually reload like that so the movie messeed up, i mean the only barrett that is bolt action is the m99 which reloads likee a regular bolt action in the movie he just pulls back like its a lmg, wtf!! im 15 and i no that who ever published this “report is a dumb ass, but wut ever good effort

Do not waste your money on this piece of crap rifle. Chey-Tac does not build the weapon. They assemble parts that various manufacturers produce. Lawton makes their barrels and dies and they don’t meet specs. The rifle sent to me and my neighbor had major headspace problems, 21 thousands off. The dies supplied for reloading didn’t meet specs either. When Chey-Tac was contacted about the problem, their response was shooter error or a bad sight picture. They would not even look at the rifle when it was hand delivered to their corporate headquarters in Arco. The excuse for the headspace problem was that the rifle was built loose for the military so that they could shoot it in the sand and dirt. Major pressure problems and the staff couldn’t care less nor would they except that the problem was with their product. They pointed fingers at the brass manufacturer.
The only bright spot that came out of this debacle was dealing with Jamison Intl.. What a class operation. Arco had been blaming Jamison for bad brass. Arco has no quality control and has no clue how to fix their problems. Jamison Intl. asked for the weapons (2) so they could get a look at them. Jamison milled the barrels and made the weapons tight, no more pressure problems. Then Chey-Tac tried to take credit for fixing the weapons when they made no attempt to even look at the rifles. Then I submitted expenses to Chey-Tac for my trip to Sturgis so that Jamison Intl. could check the weapons. Three months later they send me a check that is no good.
So if you want to spend a ton of money and get no satisfaction and get nothing but B.S. from the “factory” at Arco then go for it. Do not consider any product from Chey-Tac…….buyer beware. I can not stress enough just how messed up this company is.
Deal with another custom rifle manufacturer if you want to shoot the 408 round.
This is only a small part of my experience with Chey-Tac, it only gets worse. They have no concept of customer satisfaction nor quality control.

Amazingly everyone who picked up on the many issues dealing with the movie and “cover picture” posted here no one noticed the “COMING SOON” at bottom center of the picture. This means it was the theatre poster,and considering i have one and seen many others, (all of which have the M40A3 .308) the image was photoshopped in my opinion.

I read a post earlier about the M200 and the movie ‘Shooter’. The guy that wrote it was in charge of the weapons for the movie. it was a good read and insightful. He wasn’t a big fan of the M200 mostly due to some design flaws. He did the custom paint job for all the rifles in the movie. Also, he mentioned that the scene of the can was film in Canada and it was a hugh head ache for them to transport it across the border. In the final scene where Marky waves the M200 around the room, the rifle was a model that was made of aluminum (non shooting) by chey inc to be light and easier to wield around.

The Cheytac guns were not a big headache to transport into Canada. They were exported on a Temporary Export License issues by the US State Dept. They were actual M200 rifles delivered from Cheytac only with aluminum nonrifled blank firing barrels. The aluminum receiver was made by a prop company in Canada.

For people interested in a 408 chey tac look into the m310. It is avalable in mcmillan a5 stock or a modular aluminum folding option. It can be had single shot or mag fed repeter and costs between $5,500 and $6,000 us dollars. I’ve seen shots fired at over 2,500 yards with first round hits. Rob Furlongs kill with his tac-50 was a couple hundred yards less than that and while still an amazing shot, took 3 rounds. The 408 is a very capable round and I would recomend it to any one who likes to reach out. Expect to spend about 5 bucks every time the trigger is pulled. One a final note the heli goes down via barrett 50.

You can also try Lawton Machine in Dillon, MT. They make the M310 receiver for CHEYTAC and all the barrels for CHEYTAC rifles. The 375 Cheytac is an awesome round also.

How much would your cost be if you were to get into reloading for the .408 if you weren’t so keen on spending “5 bucks everytime you pull the trigger?”
I’ve personally seen the powder ram for reloading .50 and it was impressive. The gosh darn thing must of been 8 feet tall! I’m looking to get into reloading for personal use and maybe even for business implications with a business partner of mine. We’re expecting to invest at least $1,000 to get a good rig set-up for reloading all our own ammo so we can enjoy shooting more often.
I’ve wanted one of these Cheytac rifles for several years and this will be the year I finally get the new M200. I know ammo is always the most spendy part of owning any gun, and I haven’t done my research yet to find the die’s and powder rams for reloading .408
I’m sure it’ll be a lot cheaper, I just don’t know by how much. Costs me about $4 everytime I shoot my desert eagle .50 and I’ve saved every single one of my brass because I knew someday I would be reloading for it.

The rifle he used to kill insurgents in the opening scene was not the Cheytac m200. He was using a Remington 700 either .308 or MLR .338 Lapua Mag. You can see the Remington Markings on the side of the barrel.
The .408 Chey-tac Intervention was from his personal collection which was only fired once during the movie when he fired into a tin on his property.
he was using the M40A1 whitch was at the time the starndered Sniper of the US marines not sure on the 50 cal it was one of 3 eaither the M82 the M107 or even the M95 which is a single shot box mag fed sniper
also in the parts were people say he ajusts his windage and it adujts his elavation you all need your eyes checked cuz he uses both ajustments and they show it elavating his shot when he is using his dile on the side of the scope which ajustes the elavation Mark went through Marine Scout Sniper training and hit targets at up to 1,100 yards out so he knew what he was doing

Mark Aka Swagger uses a number of weapons in shooter
1. M40A1 Standered issue of the USMC
2. eaither the M82 or the M95
3. Chytec M200 Intervention
4. R700 .308
5. G36 shortly
6. M4 assualt Rifle
7. M9 9 mil hand gun
the last 3 weapons he uses are the M9 the R700 and the M4 he uses the R700 in the farm seance and the snow shots he uses the USMC Eaither the M40A1 or the A2 or A3 version of the M40 in the first seance the marines hardly use the R700 the stay true to the M40’s and if you all did some research you would know that also the had a real Gunnie Sgt there through the whole movie

the longest shot is 1 and 1/2 mile by a canadian sniper in afganistan but it took him 4 trys oh and iceman44 you need to watch the move agen

I here disagreements on what weapon was what. It blows my mind. First of all you have a .50 cal rifle. Who cares what type it is. Second taking head shots between 800-900 yards in a truck moving at 35 mph is pure bull. He is using a USMC M40A3 .308 with a Unertl scope. His spotter is using a Leupold spotting scope holding it with out a support, bad news. Now what would a real sniper use, if he saw trucks comming down that road. The .50 cal Raufuss round shot right into the engine and that truck would be history as well as anyone in it, and then the next truck gets it, and the next etc. One shot from a .50 cal at a chopper would go right through it and screw it up big time or blow the engine gas tank. If it was a Raufuss round, the damn chopper would be history. .Remember it’s a “Movie” not a sniper school. Great “Movie.” I have it, and love it as a movie and nothing more.

The rifle in the opening sence of shooter is the M40A3. it’s standard issue for marine snipers and packs the same punch per 100 yards than a .357 magnum point blank. Also the barret is semi-automatic not bolt action

Just watched an episode of Law & Order “Criminal Intent” that featured the CHEYTAC M200..

the m200 using normal rounds shoots 1.4mi but add the .408 round and it can fire farther then a .50cal now thats impressive

The M40 is an remingtin 700 thats what the m40 is based around lol. They just modified it and called it the M40

cheytac 200 is really amazing that it gives the sniper convenience in calculating the distance, wind velocity, humidity and others with its PDA included on the package, sooner there will be another models that are greater in performance

The weapon in the movie may have been the M200 .375 because of the barrel design and slightly different stock, it may just be me but food for thought.

The M200(s) used in Shooter were .408 caliber. Barrels were actually smooth bore blank firing barrels(no rifling).
The only difference is the bore of the barrel. Receiver, mags, bolt etc are all the same. You can have the M200 with a .375 barrel and another in .408 and swaitch them as you want.
Early M200 barrels had a shoulder in them for an ops Inc suppressor. When CHEYTAC went to STW Systems M408 suppressors the shoulder was not needed and was eliminated from the machining process for the barrels.

His rifle in the opening scene is wearing a U.S.Optics scope if i am not mistaken. And i am pretty sure if we are going to speculate on the caliber than it would have been a .338 lapua judging from the the muzzle views.

he used the M40a3 once his friend died from the helicopter fire he used an M82A1 to shoot down the chopper and yes the M200 .408 was his personal collection

GunPro, The scope used on the M200 was the Nightforce 5.5-22 X 56. They were supplied with the rifles.

used at the beginning he was indeed a Remington 700 and a Barrett M82 Chey tac intervention is a much longer one has a grip on the lower cand a ramington700 not. Such intervention, he uses only one time because that mountain to see if he could still get a certain distance
