Fire Scout – UAV Helicopter

Manufacturer: Northrop Grumman [NYSE: NOC]
Fire Scout DisplayResearch and development dollars are obviously not an object for Northrop Grumman.  From behind closed doors emerges a UAV helicopter attack ship; no doubt the product of an intense development program.  The Fire Scout UAV is capable of autonomous take-off, landing, and flight; but of course it can be controlled remotely as well.  Likewise, I have no doubt that there has also been some engineering man hours put into enabling it for preprogrammed strike missions.  Of course they’ve already equipped some with the Metal Storm weapon, the highest round-per-second gun ever built, mounted on the weapons pylons.  Technically, the Fire Scout can be equipped with a multitude of different equipment, from the most deadly weapons to even peaceful observational equipment.
Fire Scout LandThis bad boy has already been procured by the US Army, whose interest in turn spurred a purchase by the US Navy.  Apparently, it’s also impressive that the Fire Scout  landed on a moving ship, autonomously, during its testing phase, which demonstrated it’s computerized navigation system compensating for the movement of the landing pad.  Deployment plans schedule the Fire Scout to be used at the brigade level, and I’m sure that they are looking forward to having such a weapon added to their already omnipotently superior arsenal.  On a final note, the Fire Scout is also designed to operate as one of the many cogs in the network-centric weapons development program known as Future Combat Systems.

Chinese Military Weapons – Technology of the PLA

At Future Firepower we always keep the latest breaking news on the newest weaponry available to the United States Military and its allies. On top of following the technological advancements in weapons systems of the US, we also like to introduce the military capabilities of nations throughout the world. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China has some very advanced weapons systems. Ballistic missiles and missile defense programs are paramount in Chinese military planning with the PLA carrying a number of advanced bombs and missiles. Everything from mobile artillery howitzers, to high-tech tanks such as the Type-99 and the lighter Type-96 as seen in the picture below can be found in the Chinese military.
type 96 china
On top of having an array of advanced ground vehicles, China also boasts an advanced naval force with large advanced submarines, and many worthy battleships but lacking aircraft carriers. The PLA also has a capable air-force, although it is nothing that could match the capabilities of NATO forces or the United States Military with the F-22 and many other reliable and proven fighters. The Jian-10, swept-wing fighter has been introduced by the Chinese air-force but the capabilities remain unclear.

There was speculation years back that the “star wars” program would spark a new weapons race and nothing could be more true as, once again, Russia, The US, and China are entering into a weapons space race. The United States militarization of space has caused uneasiness within China and Russia which has caused them to invest in their aerospace programs as well. One very frightening feat that China has been able to attain is the ability to destroy GPS and other military satellites owned by the US. China launched a vehicle into space intending to destroy an old weather satellite 500 miles in orbit and achieved their goal proving that they could indeed take out the ‘eyes’ of the United States military. The US military also admitted that China disabled a satellite while it orbited over China’s land mass using a directive energy weapon of some sort which produced a high power beam into the face of the satellite.

With China only spending 10% of what the United States does on military technology and expenditures, the PLA has some amazingly advanced technology. Some estimates say that Chinese military spending may spike to half that of the U.S in the foreseeable future. This would make the U.S government very uneasy.

Currently there is a weapons embargo between the European Union and the US with China. The Federation of American Scientists, a liberal group long known for its opposition to nuclear weapons, has come out against lifting the EU ban on arms sales to China.”Indeed, troubling transfers of Chinese military and dual-use equipment are numerous,” Matt Schroeder of the Federation of American Scientists, wrote recently.

The British Accuracy International AS50 BMG Sniper Rifle

Accuracy International AS50as50
This awesome weapons represents the British attempt at designing the worlds greatest sniper rifle. Similar in design and features to the Barrett M107 .50 caliber sniper rifle, the Accuracy International AS50 certainly exhibits the pinnacle of futuristic sniper rifle engineering. The greatest difficulty to overcome when designing a rifle of such high caliber is how to effectively and efficiently disperse the recoil, and the AS50 employs a free-floating barrel with a dual chamber muzzle brake to accomplish this feat. One important thing to note about this rifle though, is that it is truly designed as an anti-material weapon, meaning that it is intended to be armor-piercing to take out lightly armored vehicles such as APCs and trucks rather than intended as anti-personnel. However though, the accompanying video definitely stirs the imagination when it shows the melons, the perfect shape for a human head, being blown apart after the round penetrates some concrete blocks. I’m just waiting for the X-ray vision scope to be put on this bad boy, watch out everyone!

The AS50 has documented kills in Iraq where APCs where taken out from over a mile away, they had no idea what was hitting them.

Barrett M107 Sniper Rifle – Future Weapons video

Barrett XM107The Barrett M107 BMG .50 Caliber Sniper Rifle

Manufacturer: Barrett Firearms Company

Considering the physics behind sniper rifle technology, the rule is: the larger the projectile the greater the accuracy and destructive power. Thats why arms manufacturers have recently developed new sniper rifle designs that rapidly fire .50 caliber rounds, which are powerful enough to take out lightly armored vehicles.

M82 USMCA .50 caliber machine gun can typically be found mounted on top of HMMVS and armored vehicles, but Barrett has taken the concept in a different direction: long distance and stealthy destruction. Destruction is an interesting word in itself, which literally implies to take something apart, and with the Barrett’s ability to penetrate steel armor, one can only imagine the effect on a human torso or head. Likewise, the Barrett isn’t the only .50 caliber sniper rifle on the fighting fields, British company Accuracy International recently unveiled its AS50 sniper rifle, which rivals the capabilities of the Barrett M107.

Check out this Barrett M107 video, I believe that it will get the point across.

Ground Based Radar – Military – TPQ-36(V)8 Firefinder HUMV

Ever wonder how the Military tracks and defends from air threats such as mortars, artillery, and other missiles?

Within seconds, the AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder radar system detects and backplots adversary weapons and provides pinpoint targeting information for the counterattack. The medium range Weapon Locating Radar in the Firefinder Family. The TPQ-36 automatically locates enemy medium range mortars, artillery and rocket launchers allowing pinpoint counter fire to be brought to bear. In use by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and by nations worldwide.

The Firefinder developed by Northrop Grumman is a very technologically advanced land based radar system that can acquire multiple targets simultaneously and relay that information to other weapons systems and troops to react to the threat accordingly. 113 of these systems have been delivered to the US Army and Marine Corps between 1997 and 2005, and upgrades are constantly being worked on.

Firefinder Vehicle radar

The TPQ-36(V)8 Firefinder mobile ground based radar provides automatic, fast and accurate locations of artillery, mortars and rocket launchers. Firefinder handles simultaneous fire at multiple locations, detecting and reporting positions on the first round. Firefinder also supports rapid deployment missions, is C-130 transportable, and ground mobile on HMMWV vehicles.

According to Military and Aerospace Electronics: “Engineers at the Raytheon Technical Services Co. LLC in Indianapolis are set to rebuild three AN/TPQ-37 and two AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder radar systems. Raytheon is doing the work under terms of a $13.7 million delivery order awarded Aug. 18 from the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command at Fort Monmouth, N.J. The contract number is DAAB07-00-D-H004.”

Stryker Armored Vehicle – Mobile Gun System

Manufacturer: General Dynamics [NYSE: GD]
Stryker Mobile Gun System
The latest production to roll out en masse from General Dynamic’s war factories is the Stryker Armored Vehicle. Since the Iraq War has evolved into the constant urban battle with the Muslim insurgency, America has since devised some innovations to armored vehicle design to increase the lethality and deployability of urban combat teams. These newer urban combat teams have been built around a doctrine described as the Brigade Combat Team, which aims to incorporate the latest in situational awareness electronics with increased firepower and protection in the urban environment. For example, the Stryker vehicle is digitally linked to all of its troops, so that they know where the armor and cover is, and can divert or flush enemies into an area where they can be blasted by the Stryker. There exist different variants of the Stryker, the most impressive being the Mobile Gun System variant, which is pictured above. The Mobile Gun System fires 105mm cannon that can fire either armor piercing rounds or anti-personnel rounds that can fragment shrapnel over large areas. Putting these capabilities into the hands of urban combat teams dramatically increases their effectiveness, not only through the obvious firepower advantage, but also by boosting morale. The cannon mount on the Stryker could be used to take out snipers easily by simply destroying the suspected spot completely. Likewise, ambushes or large groups of combatants could be easily dealt with by the shrapnel rounds of the 105 mm cannon. All in all, having the Stryker on the ground in any urban scenario instantly promotes success.

The Main Battle Tank of America – The M1-A1 and M1-A2 Abrams Tank Video

Manufacturer: General Dynamics [NYSE: GD]

Some countries excel in the creation of different things. It just so happens that the US excels in the creation of the machines of war. Aside from being the richest country in the world and having the Cold War spurring the development of said military technology, the Abrams tank was truly a revolutionary design when unveiled in the 80s. Despite whatever claims that certain tank exporting countries have about their newly designed next-generation tanks, none of them, aside from a distant second with the British Challenger 2 main battle tank, have been tested as extensively in battle as the M1 Abrams tank. The Abrams tank has constantly been upgraded to withstand the stresses of battle, and when it comes to a main battle tank, you actually want it to last…in battle. Support systems and facilities, repair and maintenance technicians, and myriads of other factors contribute to determining what tank could win against another. Sure other modern MBT tanks have bells and whistles, but none have the serious capability to survive and be retrofitted like the M1-Abrams tank. The M1-A2 MBT is the greatest tank in existence. Also be sure to read about the depleted uranium shells seen in slow motion in the video.

Check out this M1 Abrams tank video. The slow motion segment depicts a fin-guided round shedding it’s skin midflight.

NLOS Cannon – NLOS-C – The New Artillery of the FCS Future Combat Systems

nlos small

Manufacturer: BAE Systems [LSE: BA.L]

As we all know, the US military is constantly upgrading and improving. One of the newest programs, the Future Combat Systems (FCS) aims to automate and computerize many different processes that are currently done manually, along with dramatically increasing deployment readiness. Emerging from the FCS doctrine are many new vehicles and systems and seem near science fiction by design, and the NLOS cannon (Non-Line-of-Sight) represents one of the more tangible examples of the new machines envisioned by FCS. The NLOS cannon was designed to be ultra light weight, having rubber tracks and an aluminum hull, which allows them to be deployed in greater numbers and distances by air transport. Likely the most impressive feature of the NLOS is it’s MRSI (Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact, pronounced “mercy”) firing capability. Once the cannon has designated it’s target, it can fire up to four shells at different trajectories so that they all land on the target simultaneously. The NLOS is categorized as a self-propelled artillery platform, which signals a departure from traditional towed artillery. The NLOS cannon is slated to be a test bed for new FCS and artillery technologies, and will likely see even more improvements before deployed in the field.
