Manufacturer: GIAT Industries

The French, their military history aside, actually are widely known in Europe for their innovative and solid armored vehicle designs. In the mid 1980′s, Britain introduced its Challenger 2 main battle tank, Germany rolled out the impressive Leopard 2, and the US unveiled its M1A1 Abrams tank. The world was being introduced to battle machinery that combined decades of design research and cutting edge electronics systems. Not wanting to be left behind, the French decided to join the party. They had initially planned on simply importing the German Leopard 2 tank, but after some cost forecasting and design speculation, these plans were rejected. Thus the French decided to design their own tank, and they specialized in different aspects of design from other Western tanks. In steps the GIAT industries Leclerc French Main Battle Tank.
Indeed, it only bodes well for Western civilization to have diversity amongst tank designs, especially among allies. The most notable specializations of the Leclerc are its propulsion and driving capabilities. The Leclerc is not only the fastest western tank, but it is also the quickest to stop, having a hydro pneumatic retarder built into the gearbox that can utilize the tanks engine to aide in slowing the vehicle. Likewise, these capabilities are also made possible because the Leclerc is the lightest main battle tank, which also helps it to be transported easily and cost-effectively. All in all, the Leclerc Main Battle Tank is an impressive design that adds value to the militaries of NATO.
Check out this Leclerc tank video, it is ominously set to the classical piece Requiem for a Dream.

This will finally put to rest all those lame French tank jokes. I think the Leclerc is the most balanced of all the western tanks. Sure, tanks like the Abrams and Challenger may have slightly better armor but that just means they’re heavier and require that much more fuel to move. For the fast paced combat of today I think the Leclerc is most suited.
I’m not quite sure where i stand on this, it pains me to say that a french tank is the best, but it might be, but the question is moot, a tank is useless if just keep surrendering.
Amen, CJ….
The French have a long illustrious history of doing just that!
And the LeClerc has never been battle tested, vs. Abrams & Challenger, who have come out THEE top winners…
LeClerc? It’s a ‘pretty’ MBT….but it hasn’t proven itself….maybe it could be used to deliver French pastry’s to the REAL tankers in the FEBA….HA!
Its fast so it can retreat.
And high rate of fire so it can prey on massed outdated tanks.
The french way of war.
You guys are lame with your uninspired French jokes.
You better study history a bit more, obviously you don’t beyond the birth of your own country which was very recent! Go back to primary school dummies.
As for the the Leclerc, it is indeed impressive.
The French Leclerc MBT is not suited for modern war…
The Challenger and Abrahms have thick armour at every angle you could imagine, because theres constant treats of RPG attacks , and other anti tank tools…
I’m Glad such a tank was made, because it is needed in NATO’s arsenal, the Leclerc is more of a SOF tank, get a whole bunch in at night, strike, and leave, very smart, and possibly useful in the near future, as for now, the thick armour tanks will have to do, in this theater of war
honestly it is to me a good raider’s tank. Light, Fast, good maneuverability, and quick reloading time. I myself am more of a shock kinda guy so I gotta go with the Abrams, Challenger, and Leopard. I prefer lots of armor in lots of places, and good firing capability. I like the idea of the leclerc, but at this time I just can’t see it unless it’s gonna play into the theatre of eastern europe or middle east because of it’s need for room to play. all around good tank though. just not my cup of tea.
I agree it is a quick strike tank that’s fast and manueverable! It would work well in a at night and overwhelm the enemy and retreat before they knew what hit them!
to all of you making fun of french history,
France’s military history spans thousands of years, and numerous wars. Sandwiched between the like of england, spain, germany, and italy, France has always had to fight for its survival in the face of powerful countries. France has had to fight even when they knew theyd lose, so what if they surrendered? it was obviously because they had no hope. I bet all of you are pathetic americans. The US ALWAYS picks on the little guy, cuz their a bunch of pussies who cant take on someone their own size. YOU LOST IN VIETNAM, YOU LOST IN IRAQ, YOU CANT EVEN BEAT THE EUROPEANS IN BASKETBALL ANYMORE…. your a pethetic bunch of criminals. FUCK YOU
Yes, please no more lame French jokes. Somehow, I dont think Mexico poses the same military threat Germany would.
Anyways, the French were into lighter vehicles way before the concept was trendy. Though the lighter LeClerc design is excellent, any tank with only three crew members has a design flaw. Auto Loaders cant perform maintenance, fire extra weapons, watch for threats etc. etc. The French need to take the auto loader out and add another French human.

The LeClerc is one of the best tank in the world! Its fast, agile and sophisticated firepower makes it a thing to reckon with… the french really did a good job to make it that way!
Guys lets not argue here, thee most important thing for a tank to be the best is the crew. Its the crew ability to fully used that technology to its full advantage makes it even more deadly. Both must work together. The crew must know its operation in and out and the limitation in the design is its weakness. Every tank in the world as a weak point and strong point. The question is how good is its crew under real combat ?
Looks like a good tank good fast hitter i dont know how long it would last in a slugging match with an Abrahams ,Leopard or Challenger though. Could be a very good forward tank for probing and hit and run. As for the french jokes well im english
and the frogs are ok by me. Now if it was italian i would start making jokes.
The claim that the LeClerk is the world’s fastest tank is highly questionable. I believe, based upon what I’ve heard from tankers that nothing runs as fast as the turbine powered Abrams. Also, if going into combat in a tank, I want to be in a Challenger, Abrams, Merkava or Leopard. They have the kind of armour that allows a tank to survive hits from antitank weapons. I wonder just how well the LeClerk does compared to the proven four I mentioned.
In closing, it is still an impressive piece of armour!
If you think about it,the leclerc isn’t the best tank. It’s good for it’s role, but not a slugger. The Abrams, Challenger, Ariete, Leopard, etc, have good armor, and has tested composite armor. France’s leclerc, doesn’t have the same armor, but a totally new armor that hasn’t seen combat at all. Also, these “advanced” computers. Guess what, the Abrams had them long before france caught wind of it. That Mobility. Yeah, the same speed as all the rest except for the Challenger, which is a bit slow, but still. And of that douche about halfway down the page. I’m from france to canada, to america. You’re and idiot for saying we Lost Vietnam. France lost it first, then we retreated. We still had the supplies, just not the funding. If we lost, we’d be depleted of our resources. Maybe you should study more about history in general. As for the rest, the leclerc isn’t a bad tank. It’s just not as great as you guy’s say it is, or as bad as you say it is. It’s fit for the same kind of combat an abrams is, minus the heavy fire on the tankers. It’s like the lambo of tanks, in it’s acceleration, and stopping power…..and it’s durability. If the main gun’s velociy can exceed 1700m/s then I’ll agree that it’s got good firepower. If it’s just 1,100m/s, then they need to do some work…
Also, the FFL is bad ass, and if they were behind the wheel of one of these with a gun that matched the abrams, it’d be way more advanced then the T-90. The T-90′s still not that good btw, for all you russian tank fans. It’s actually not that special because it too hasn’t seen combat and it’s just small…and cramped….and a safety hazard to the crew….You know what. I’ll just say it’s on even terms and just has equal of a chance as the rest of the NATO tanks.
Good for Blitzkrieg, I guess

when I think about what makes a main battle tank superior I cannot help thinking about a tank that is not just well armoured and fast but a tank that can reload and refire its main gun accurately at its opponent faster than the opponent can. This makes the LeCleric a clear winner as the best MBT of to-day.It is well armoured, it is fast, its battle information system is superior to any other trank of today, and its main gun can re-fire faster than any other known tank of to-day.The LeCleric clearly gets my vote as the best MBT of to-day
