The explosive pressure generated on warhead detonation vastly exceeds the strength of the metal liner - and it flows plastically . The jet is in fact a continuously elongating line of high energy material, which focuses the kinetic energy on a small cross-section of the armour- and hence its great penetrative capability. However if the jet can be de-stabilised - its penetrative power can be reduced. (hence shaped charge shells are not spin-stabilised).
